Prostate

The prostate is a small genital organ which may cause serious trouble to men if infected.

Structures of the Prostate

The prostate is made up of many small glands which are connected together like small bunches of grapes. There are somewhere between 20 and 60 of these bunches called acini in the prostate. Each bunch connects to the urethra.

Symptoms of Prostate Problems (Prostatitis)

Urinary Problems:

  • Increased urination urgency
  • Increased urination frequency
  • Difficulty in completely emptying the bladder
  • Pain when urinating
  • Interruptions during urination (stop and start)
  • Weak urine stream
  • Waking at night one or more times to urinate
  • Difficulty in starting urination
  • Split stream of urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Bladder stones
  • Bloated feeling
  • Frequent bladder/kidney infections
  • Itching sensation at the tip of the penis
  • Rash or redness at the tip of the penis
  • Dribbling or difficulty in stopping cleanly (large wet spot on underwear)
  • Sand like particles in urine
  • Burning sensation between the legs

Pain/ache/discomfort:

Prostatic infections and blockage cause pain sensation in swollen prostate. In addition, there are several nerves which pass through the area and which can be stimulated by the pressure of the swollen prostate and creates pain sensations. The compression results in pain which may be far removed from the prostate (referred pain), such as lower back pain, tingling foot. Also the infection can spread into the epididymis and into the testicles and seminal vesicles:

Pain sensation:

  • In the scrotum
  • In the penis
  • Centered in the perineum (the area between the anus and the scrotum
  • In one or both testicles (with or without swelling)
  • Just above the anus
  • In the lower back.
  • In the lower stomach
  • Before, during or after ejaculation.
  • When riding a bike
  • During bowel movements
  • When walking
  • When sitting

Sexual Problems:

It is hard to enjoy sex when ejaculation causes pain. Several major blood streams run through the area and may be constricted making it hard to have or maintain an erection. Premature ejaculation is also common during prostatitis. Hytrin and Proscar may be prescribed by a doctor in an attempt to increase urine flow, and both have adverse effects on your sex life. Prostatitis is in fact contagious but many doctors have the opposite view, that is why some women have reported burning sensations from their partner's semen.

Fertility problems:

Sperm count and mobility can be seriously reduced by prostatitis due to the infection, inflammation and blockag. The sperm must pass through a narrow duct in order to get to the urethra. This narrow passage can be squeezed shut by the swelling in the prostate, causing reduced sperm count. The prostatic secretion of an infected prostate is much thicker and its pH varies considerably from the normal value. This has a detrimental effect on the mobility of sperm. If the infection spreads to the epididymis these may become blocked with pus or scar tissue.

Psychological Problems:

These mental problems may just be caused by the frustration of being told by a dcotor that the pain is in your head or that nothing can be done so just live with it. These problems can be very severe and can not be ignored.

  • Stress
  • Suicidal
  • Irritative
  • Depression
  • Apathy
  • Low Libido

Miscellaneous Problems:

  • Semen volume low
  • Semen smells bad
  • Urine smells strong or bad
  • Semen appears lumpy or yellowish or greyish
  • Blood in semen
  • Discoloration of the penis
  • Retrograde ejaculation

Chills and fever:

These symptoms are generally only in the acute prostatitis. The symptoms usually lasts for a few days.
