Background
Chronic bacterial prostatitis is the infection of the prostate glands. This is evidenced by bacterial growth in culture of expressed prostatic fluid, semen, or postmassage urine specimen. If the expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) contains more than 10 white blood cells (WBCs) per high-power field (HPF), that shows the presence of infection.
Frequency
Approximately half of men experience symptoms of prostatitis at some time in their life. However, only a small percentage of men with symptoms of prostatitis have bacterial prostatitis.
Symptoms
Repeting urinary tract infections, irritative voiding symptoms, dysuria, frequency, and urgency urination. Discomfort in pelvis and perineum, fevers and chills are common.
Characteristics of chronic bacterial prostatitis include the following:
Chronic bacterial prostatitis is the most common cause of relapsing urinary tract infection in males.
Vague discomfort in lower abdomen, back and testicles is reported, pelvis, perineum,EPS, massage urine culture after massage, or semen culture.
Genitourinary pain, Clear urethral discharge, Recurrent urinary tract infection, Dysuria and hematospermia.

Prostate is partly firmness due to infection and is a very tender, warm, swollen, firm gland. chronic bacterial prostatitis may be associated with symptoms of perineal, scrotal, and low back discomfort, the physical examination findings are typically normal.
