Second, this is performed to drain the prostate fluid out of the prostate glands. Either it is used for microscopic exam or to clean up the prostate glands.
A lubricated, gloved finger inserted into the rectum and the other hand to press on the lower belly or pelvic area to feel for tenderness, enlargement, hardness, or growths.
Below is a detailed description of digital rectal exam (DRE).
Digital Rectal Exam, DRE
The prostatitis patient bends over the examination table resting his elbows on the table, or alternatively, a patient can lay on his side on the exam table in the fetal position. Then the doctor gently inserts one lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum area and examine the back of the prostate to determine its size, texture and consistency. A normal prostate is about the size of a walnut and soft when touched.
Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)
A digital rectal examination is done to check for problems with organs or other structures in the pelvis area. During the examination, a lubricated, gloved finger of one hand is put gently into the rectum.
A digital rectal exam is done for men as part of a complete physical examination to check the prostate gland for cancer and other infections. Other organs such as the bladder and seminal vesicles, can also be felt during a digital rectal exam.
Why It Is Done
A digital rectal exam (DRE) is done to:
- Symptoms such as a change in urination, rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habits, blood in the stool, or belly or pelvic pain.
- Check for the presence of hemorrhoids or the growths of cancer in the rectum. . DRE may not be helpful in finding internal hemorrhoids because they are soft and hard to feel.
- Check for growth and enlargement of the prostate glands. This is done as part of a regular examination for symptoms, such as a change in urination. Usually a tumor in the prostate can often be felt as a hard lump and need further exams.
How It Feels
Most cases men may feel some discomfort or pain during a digital rectal exam (DRE). Your health professional must press firmly on the prostate to check for problems and the pressure is painful and may make you feel the need to urinate. The examination may be extremely painful if the prostate gland is swollen or infected.
